Meeting Activities
Scouts worked on advancements, played some games and discussed the Hero Climb this weekend and how it was great practice for Philmont. Scouts must stay in the fellowship hall for indoor meetings. Only go in the hall if you need to use the restrooms.

Scout Accounts
Money from parking and tent setups is in your Scout accounts. Scouts can check with Mr. Lorenz to see how much money they've made this summer. The rate was around $17.50 per hour. This money can be used for events, camps, dues, camping supplies and Philmont. See Mr. Lorenz for details. Annual Dues info coming soon.

Advancements
Colin Peek was promoted to Star
Shane Smith was promoted to Life

Sept 18, Regular meeting
Help build projects for climbing and catapult for…

Sept 21, 6:30-7:45pm: Cub Scout Join Night!
Wear your class A uniform and tell them all the fun you're having in Scouts!

Sept 22 Order of the Arrow Ordeal weekend at Gerber
Eat before you arrive at Gerber between 6-8pm (arrive as early as you can to set up your tent before Ordeal starts, soon after 8.) Packing info is attached below:

Here's the old packing list that was used years ago, and really hasn't changed but is a bit better than what's available online now.

Order of the Arrow Event Packing List
Below will be a list of items we recommend you bring to the Ordeal. Keep in mind that these items will not be needed at all events.
Backpack for carrying your gear
Medications (Inform those working check-in of these)
Pillow
Sleeping Bag
BSA Health and Medical Forms B & A
Ground Cloth
Wet Weather Gear
Scout Uniform
Basic Toiletries/towel (for showers on Saturday night)
Pocket knife
2 Water Bottles
Work Clothes Including gloves and a hat with a bill or brim (Some
work projects will involve painting, so bring old work clothes you
don’t mind getting paint on)
Drinking cup
Insect Repellant
sunscreen
Flashlight
work Gloves
Other items for the remainder of the weekend:
● Spending money for the Trading Post (OA items available to members)
● Tent (to sleep in Saturday night) and other clothing appropriate for the weather

Electronics
Cell phones are prohibited from the beginning of the ordeal ceremony until after your ceremony Saturday night. You can bring them, but they must be turned off during your Ordeal. Signal coverage is spotty in camp, and it's best to save your battery for important calls.

Property Identification & Gear
Remember, most scouting apparel looks pretty much the same. Label all clothing and items with something so that it will get back to you if lost. Scouters generally go to extreme measures to return lost property, but only if you make it easy. If you do lose something, check the Dining Hall for lost and found. You should also mention it to your Elangomat.

After check-in you will be asked to go to your campsite and set up your tent (to sleep in
Saturday night). Your gear that you do not take with you Friday night can be left in your
tent. There will be people in the campsite while you are not, but do not leave valuables,
money, or required medicines in your gear. It would be good to bring with you a pair of
work gloves with your name written on or in each glove.

Friday Night Food/apparel/shelter
Remember, you may not bring food or candy with you Friday night. We recommend you
pack two bags, one for Friday night and another for Saturday night. Know that if
dangerous or heavy storms come through Friday night, you will be moved to a shelter.
You need to have your Friday gear light and portable and ready. You can roll your gear
tightly into your tarp and secure it all with a light rope that you can throw over your
shoulder. You need to be able to carry your Friday gear several miles in your hands or
hanging from your shoulder.
Be prepared to shield yourself from mild rain or heavy dew, overnight with a tarp. You
will most likely be placed in a camping location along a secured roadway. The ground
will not be soft, so a ground pad can help you get some sleep.
Again, your Friday pack should be minimal, light and able to be worn over your
shoulder. A small bottle of personal sized insect repellent would also be advisable. If
you have medicines you must take, make sure you have those with you in a tight zip
lock baggie. Make sure you also keep all your money with you or locked in your vehicle.
Cell phones and other electronics should be turned off and only used in case of
personal emergency situations. Please do not use radios or MP3 players during your ordeal.

Meeting Activities
Scouts worked on advancements, collected branches for pioneering projects, practiced building structures with lashings, and learned: DO NOT MESS WITH THINGS THAT STING!!! While getting branches, they disturbed a nest and got swarmed. Many Scouts were treated with cream and Benadryl pills (after parental consent). Scouts were reminded that running, flailing and swatting just aggravate the situation. If your Scout is missing a shirt or shoes, check the back end of the Church parking lot and the ravine (at your own risk).

The Troop still needs branches and logs 3-4” thick and really long. Up to and well over 6 feet for some pioneering projects. Please bring them to the shed if you have any at home.

Scout Accounts
Money from parking and tent setups will be in your Scout accounts by our next meeting. Scouts can check with Mr. Lorenz to see how much money they've made this summer. The rate was around $17.50 per hour. This money can be used for events, camps, dues, camping supplies and Philmont. See Mr. Lorenz for details.

September 10, 1-4+ pm at St. Joseph High School stadium 9/11 Hero Climb
From Mr. Peek: I spoke to Boss heating and air conditioning about the stair climb. They are the sponsors of the event. Julie Laurent advised that Boss will be setting up tents on Sunday the 10th. From 1-4.

I told her about the scouts doing the stair climb on the 10th. (Since we can’t make it on the 11th because the scouts will be in school). She said that if the scouts assisted in putting the tents up they would count that as the entry fee.

We could then do the stair climb after that. The participants would then get the goody bag and medals for completing the climb.

Orrin had a good idea of having the fire department be there too to give a short talk about 9/11.

That’s a win win for everyone.

(Wear your class B, exercise clothes, have a water bottle, sunscreen and bug spray.) The flyer for the main event on Monday is attached for interested adults.

August 17th 11:30-6:30pm Recruiting at Upton Middle School Start Up Day
Represent the Scout Troop at the start up day! Get new students interested in scouting! We will have a table in the gym. Wear your Class A.

August 21, 10am - 4pm Emmet Lorenz Eagle Scout project at Upton Middle School
I'm planning my second work day for the 21st of August. We will be mulching and raking the trails, and long pants and gloves might be needed again. I'm thinking 10-4 again, but we probably won't need that much time. There is mulch at the school, so people will need to bring rakes and wheelbarrows if they can fit in their cars. Otherwise, we'll just be mulching. I'd like as many people as possible to come, because the faster the better. There will be food and water as well. Meet at the tennis courts behind the school.

August 21, Park in grass for regular meeting
We will meet on the front lawn of the Church while the parking lot is resurfaced. All adults that are going to Philmont should attend for a Philmont meeting (details below). We will practice relay skills.

Meeting Activities
Scouts unloaded the trailer and talked about how much fun they had at Mackinac and Summer Camp! They worked on advancements and got their books signed off for camping nights, service hours, and other accomplishments (always bring your Scout book to meetings!). Cleaned tents were turned in. Attached is a picture of an award they got at Rotary.

Mackinac was great! We got lots of compliments and improved our scores over last year. One Scout who had gone with us and then with another troop said ours was the most fun! Great job!

Summer camp at Rotary was awesome! There were nice showers, wonderful staff, the best camp food Mr. Bacon has had, and ~95 merit badges completed!

Meeting Activities
Scouts and parents got their questions answered, turned in copies of forms for Summer Camp, and played with the carts. We need more driver volunteers for the drive back on Saturday! Everyone traveling to camp should bring a sack lunch to eat on the ride. Scouts getting rides home from camp with non-parents/guardians should have a separate $15-20 for lunch on the way home if your ride decides to take a break. Don’t spend it at camp! :-)

Urgent!
I hope I’m wrong, but Scouts who are not showing up for any summer camp classes as of last night: Soren Carter, Michael Eaton, Matthew LePorte, Victor Vargas. Email Bobby Hill at for help and the QR code you need to access your account and add classes for your Scout. The QR codes he sent last night are different and don't seem to go where you can add classes, it only shows what you have registered already. Your QR is to the right of your Scout’s name. They are all different, be sure to use your own code so you get classes associated with the right person. Reply to this if you need help and send me a screenshot of your updated class list when you are done. Everyone, print your updated class list and send it to camp with your Scout to help them know their schedule. Also print a copy of the Rotary Map so they know where to go.

Information to complete your summer camp forms.
On your physical forms you need to put on B1, Unit Leader: Bobby Hill cell: 269-930-1743 and Brett Bacon cell: 269-369-8145 (adding Brett since Bobby won’t be at camp, but have him on there for future camp outs where you will use the same health forms).
Council Name: Southern Shores Field Service Council, Unit No. 623

On your Camper Release form: Unit 623, Campsite: Ranger 2. List a few of our leaders who are camping along with your other preferred drivers.

Bo Conroy 630-414-2988
Greg Smith 269-921-3407
Bill Conroy 630-809-6420
Brett Bacon (leaving Friday night) 269-369-8145
Is your physical up to date?
Anyone attending any camp this summer that is longer than 72hrs needs to have a current Scout Physical: forms A, B, and C on file! This applies to all Scouts and adults. Part C needs a physician's signature/stamp so get those appointments completed before camp! Some offices need a few business days to fill out the forms so don’t wait until the last minute. Please see attachments. If anyone takes medications they have a form for that too. Make sure you have enough medication to last through camp. Please scan the completed forms for future use and bring completed copies to our leaders on Sunday at 7:30am for departure. KEEP YOUR ORIGINALS!

Summer Camp at Camp Rotary: Week of July 23-29, 2023
3201 S Clare Avenue, Clare MI 48617 (for your GPS)
Bring completed physical forms A, B1, B2, and C,  medication forms, Scout release form, and any other forms that apply to you. Do not staple the different forms together, they will be separated into different sections of a binder for check in. Medications for camp will need to be in the original bottles/containers so start getting those ready to cover you from Sunday through Saturday. Label bottles that don’t have your name on them and put multiple medications in a ziplock with your name on it. This will help keep them organized and safe from moisture.

We need drivers! Contact Bobby Hill and Mr. Bacon at to be a driver with how many Scouts you can fit with seatbelts. We are meeting at the church at 7:30am to get personal items into the trailer, forms to the leaders, and medications checked in, then depart at 8am. Scouts should wear their class A’s while traveling to camp. Everyone traveling should pack a sack lunch to eat while traveling. Those doing the swim test should eat at least 30 minutes before we swim.

Rides should be at the camp between 9:30 and 10am on Saturday to take Scouts home.
3201 S Clare Avenue, Clare MI 48617

Packing
A suggested packing list is below and on pages 268-269 of your Scout book, please LABEL EVERYTHING! Put your Scout’s name and 623 on everything: all bags, clothes, books, water bottles, etc. Label your Scout book with your name in big print! Everyone has the same book so make yours distinctive! Photocopy or take pictures of your Scout’s Rank progress, Hiking, Service, and Camping logs from the back of their Scout book in case the book gets lost or damaged. Pack your Scout book in a large ziplock bag in the daypack. Keep your printed badge worksheets in a folder or binder in a ziplock too. Ziplock bags and plastic trash bags help keep your gear dry. When packing, keep the daypack separate from items that may go in the trailer. Have the swimsuit, towel, etc in a waterproof bag with or in your daypack since we will not have access to anything in the trailer until all swim tests are done and registration, tours are complete. If you are wearing your swimsuit on the drive there, make sure you have a complete dry outfit to change into for the tours if you don’t like walking while wet.

Check your badge requirements for additional items your Scout may need. Decide as a family how much spending money your scout should take. Leaders were recommending $100 for the week of camp if you don’t have extra costs with badge choices. Consider extra fees for class supplies, several dollars a day for snacks, and souvenirs. Scouts should be responsible for their own $, but money can be held by our summer camp leaders. Remember the separate lunch $ for the trip home if you are not driving your Scout. May or may not be needed.

Meeting Activities
Scouts packed both trailers, worked on advancements, and got merit badge booklets for camp.

Please scan the completed forms for future use and bring completed copies to the July 17th meeting. If your physical is after Monday, let the leaders know.

Mackinac coming soon!
Get all your stuff ready and confirm when and where to meet your ride to get to the drop off site on time. Your leader should have sent out your assigned flag. Please learn where it is, and learn about it’s history/story. Keep practicing and get ready for a great week!

Summer Camp at Camp Rotary: Week of July 23-29, 2023
Get your prerequisites done! Next week, July 17th, is the last week to get the forms signed off. Bring completed physical forms, medication forms, and any other forms that apply to you. Do not staple the different forms together, they will be separated into different sections of a binder for check in. Medications for camp will need to be in the original bottles/containers so start getting those ready to cover you from Sunday through Saturday. Label bottles that don’t have your name on them and put multiple medications in a zip lock with your name on it. This will help keep them organized and safe from moisture. Please speak to the leaders if you have temperature sensitive medications.

Our departure time after camp is TBD.

Please see below for the info from Camp Rotary about arrival.

Committee Meeting July 11, 7pm.
Lots to plan!

Mackinac coming soon! Got 2 full uniforms? Sew new stuff on! Take online quiz!
All Mackinac youth should be completing their Island facts quiz (help your patrol win!), should be hearing from their Patrol leader about first day activities, flag assignment, and guide service assignments for first days.  One more Mackinac parent communication will come out after July 4th reminding all to arrange travel, be ready, and be on time. Mr. Walsh handed out a lot of requested badges this week, please make sure you get them on your uniforms! See info below if still in need of some badges.

Each participant needs 2 full uniforms for Mackinac so please check what patches you have and need a duplicate of and send Mr. Walsh an email of what you need. If your position changed during the last election, please ask for the new ones and get them sewn on. Please add a parent to all emails/texts when communicating with adults for the 2 deep leadership protocol. Each Scout is responsible for their ride to Mackinac and back, a sign up spreadsheet was done to help people find rides. Keep practicing and studying! The online quiz will see which patrol gets the most responses.

Summer Camp at Camp Rotary: Week of July 23-29, 2023, you can do your Order of the Arrow ordeal there (maybe). Is your account red? Fill in more info!
Get your prerequisites done! If you recently were elected to the Order of the Arrow, you can do your ordeal during summer camp! Email Mr. Hill if interested in completing your ordeal at Rotary. You will need to inform all badge counselors that you will be missing a day for your ordeal so they can help you keep up with the requirements. We are checking on a packing list for your ordeal. Please stay tuned. Please see attached forms for camp. Their website may have more.

If you have gone online to register and select badges, make sure you have everything filled in! The following families are in RED and need to complete their information for Summer Camp: Bacon, Carter, Conroy, Smith, and Vargus. Use the QR code you signed up with and enter the missing information. If you have questions, please reply to this or come to the July 10th meeting for assistance. It could just be a missing emergency contact or your home address. Corrections should only take a few minutes.

Original camp sign up info.
Fill out the “SummerCamp23” form and bring it with payment if you haven’t already! We want to get our deposits and badge selections in ASAP, since the selection window is open and some badges are already full. See other attached files for badge options and the sheet to list your selections. If you already paid, check the guardian’s email for a message from Mr. Hill or Mr. Lorenz with your link to update Scout info. After clicking on update info, scroll down and you can start selecting sessions (easier to do from a computer). Each Scout has a different link so be sure you are using the matching link for the right Scout and that auto correct/fill doesn’t put in a parent’s name where the Scout’s should be (totally not speaking from experience, oops, but easily fixable.) Just be careful not to unselect your wanted session by mistake and losing your slot. You can click “Done” any time and come back and fix anything needed later.

We have another tent setup this Friday with take down on Sunday for the Martin family. Use the link below to sign up to help.

Does anyone have a golf cart we can use for the Triathlon? Please let me know. We need 2-3 more adults for all time slots for the Triathlon this weekend! A few of our regulars are gone this week. Please keep the Sparkman family in your prayers for the passing of Kurt’s father on the 17th: Gregory Sparkman. Also, please pray for Mr. Langlois who is having surgery today. We hope their healing processes are surrounded with love, comfort, and care.

Tent Set Up Season is here! 1 this Friday/Sunday!
The tracker for tent setups is available at the link below.  It’s one of the main fundraisers for the troop for the year.  It can be very lucrative for the kids.  Please check the sheet often for updates and more opportunities. Please text Mr. Dansfield at 269-325-1733 for questions and updates. Times and dates may change for weather and scheduling conflicts.

This weekend!!! Triathlon Parking Sign up! We need a few more adults and a golf cart!
Below is the link to the Steelhead Triathlon parking signup.  This is our biggest fundraiser for the year.  We will need as many of the spots filled as we can get to ensure we are successful.  Sunday morning is the most vital to be fully staffed with Scouts and adults.  We will fill the lot starting around 4:30 and be largely full by 7am.  We’ll bring in lunch and snacks for those helping out.  And we give credit to the adults that work, just like we do to the kids.  They can use it for their registration and camp.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Bobby Hill or Mr. Dansfield for more information.
